Get on board the Go Edinburgh 2016 Campaign

Ian Craig, Chief Executive commented:

We’re completely on board with the Go Edinburgh 2016 campaign. Edinburgh is a fantastic city for athletes and it should be a natural choice for the NPCS. We hope all our passengers join in to support the campaign and make Edinburgh the sports capital of Scotland.

Edinburgh is up against Dundee and Stirling to be the location for the new £25 million National Performance Centre for Sport (NPCS). The Centre will provide Scotland's top athletes with the facilities, programmes and services that they need to enable them to prepare to excel on the international stage.

Heriot-Watt University has teamed up with Edinburgh City Council to submit a bid which has already attracted support from sporting legends such as Sir Chris Hoy and Gavin Hastings.

Councillor Richard Lewis, the City’s Culture and Sport Convener, said:

As the capital city, Edinburgh is the perfect home for the NPCS and would provide an easily accessible facility for Scotland’s top performing athletes to train and develop.

We need everyone to back our bid and bring this national facility to Scotland’s capital.

Look out for our Go Edinburgh 2016 buses which are operating across our services now.

Gambado Edinburgh has a range of activities for children of all ages which will keep them entertained for hours!

Younger children can play and develop in their toddler areas, which includes a sensory play area. Older children can also join in the fun by trying out some more challenging equipment, like their state of the art climbing wall.

With our support, their toy bus was built by NextGen Woodcraft and painted by the Gambado Edinburgh staff to look like one of our fleet.

Michelle MacNeill, Assistant Manager, Gambado Edinburgh said of the bus:

The kids love it and we have had some really nice feedback from the customers regarding the new imagination zone, with the bus definitely being a highlight for the little ones.

Dr Steve Johnson, Environmental & CSR Manager,  Lothian Buses said:

We are delighted so many local children are enjoying playing on the bus.  We were also very impressed to hear a few children taking the driving seat reciting the stops on different service numbers.  Maybe we’ll see them joining our team in a few years!

You can enter our Sunday Family DAYticket competition for the chance to win one of our family day out prizes including a day out at Gambado for a family of 5!

Lothian Buses Electric Bus Trial

How does it work?

The fully electric bus is being charged at a specially-installed point at our Central Depot. Energy is stored in 56 batteries which take about 6 hours to charge from empty to full.  Once charged, the bus and can travel 70-100 miles before it needs to be charged again. A regenerative braking system is also included and means the batteries get charged as the bus slows down.

As the bus runs entirely off its own batteries it has no exhaust – so no air pollutants are produced on the street. It can be charged using electricity purely from renewable sources, which would give it an operational carbon footprint of almost zero.

The electric motor also makes the bus much quieter than conventional diesel buses cutting on-street and in-bus noise considerably.

The manufacturer, Optare, based in Leeds is one of the first manufacturers of electric buses in the UK. We already have a small number of conventional diesel Optare vehicles which usually operate on services 39, 61 and 69.

The bus will not be run in service, but is one of many environmentally friendly buses that we trial to see how they suit the needs of us, our passengers and the City.

Doors Open Day - 28 September 2013

We are set to reveal industry secrets and our impressive history when we open our doors to the public once again on Saturday 28 September as part of the Cockburn Association’s Doors Open Day.

Building on the success of last year's event which saw 4,000 people visit our depot, this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better.

Highlights this year will include ‘hybrid bus’ racing, a special visiting bus from overseas, and a line up of Edinburgh double-deckers from the last 70 years.

There will also be a kidzone with face painting and a bouncy castle, a display of classic photos and memorabilia plus new for this year there will be an eco zone and plus many surprises along with the usual favourites of the vintage buses on display and trips through the bus wash.

Dr Steve Johnson, event organiser, said:

The Cockburn Association’s Doors Open Day is a great opportunity for us to welcome the general public along and to learn more about what we do. The event will be great fun for all the family.

The 2013 event promises to be the best yet and we look forward to welcoming many of our passengers and other visitors to the depot.  The ‘hybrid bus’ racing is likely to be a big attraction but we have plenty of other attractions for everyone to enjoy.

Doors Open Days run throughout September across Scotland, giving millions of people free access to locations normally kept under lock and key. We were one of the first of the 500 plus Scottish buildings to sign up for the 2013 event.

Our Central Depot will be open from 11.45am until 16.00 on Saturday 28 September with depot tours running regularly throughout the day using open top double-decker buses.

The event is free, and all donations received will go to Lothian Buses’ 2013 Charity of the Year – It’s Good to Give.

We look foward to seeing you all there.

6VT Youth Cafe thanks us for our support

6VT Youth Cafe in Victoria Terrace provides assistance for vulnerable and young families, homeless children and young people who are seeking employability support as well as ensuring that those at risk are able to attend their drop in activities to receive support and advice.

We started working with the cafe in 2011 through Pilotlight, a charity who match and manage teams of senior business people to coach and support local causes. This year we continue our support by providing a further year's worth of adult and child bus travel to help people make a positive change in their lifes.

Dot Thorne, Director, 6VT Youth Café said:

Lothian Buses generous award to 6VT for the second year running is a tremendous boost and will allow us to sustain and support young people most in need to access a range of supports and services.  The tickets enable young people to access our service as well as help those most in need to get to important appointments such as job interviews. The tickets also help in our day to day work and enable us to take groups on local outings as part of our youth activity programmes.   In this challenging financial climate this support from Lothian Buses is hugely appreciated by all at 6VT Youth Café.

Ian Craig, Chief Executive, Lothian Buses said:

As a key part of Edinburgh life we are delighted to continue to support those in our community.  I worked with the 6VT Youth Café team in 2011/12 and was impressed in how greatly their work impacted on those in need of a helping hand and was pleased to continue our assistance in 2013.

Other Park & Rides

Hermiston Park & Ride is an ideal location if you are arriving by car from the west. Our services 25, X25 and 34 provide frequent links to the city centre and their night time equivalents N25 & N34 mean that there is no last bus, so no need to worry about that evening performance overrunning!

If you are arriving from the south then Straiton Park & Ride (services X37, 47 & 67) and Sheriffhall Park & Ride (services 33 & 49) have direct bus services to the city centre and from the east Wallyford Park & Ride is well served by our service 44/44A (& N44 Saturday and Sunday morning).

New summer service 28

Every Saturday and Sunday from the start of July until the 15 September we'll be operating service 28 every 20 minutes during the day. If you fancy a day out at the National Museum of Scotland or a walk through the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh then this service will drop you right at the doors of both! Full details of this service can be found by clicking here.

Extra Sunday 41 buses

On each Sunday during the Festival (4, 11, 18, 25 August & 1 September) we will be providing extra journeys on service 41 to ensure that you won't be left behind. Full details of this Sunday service can be found by clicking here.

New summer N15 & other NightBus improvements

At the start of July we relaunched our NightBus Network with improved routes and timetables. New service N15 runs hourly through the night (until 15 September) meaning visitors can get back to Mortonhall Caravan Park or to accommodation at Queen Margaret University with ease. We made lots of other improvements to our NightBus services including extending service N16 to Leith and Silverknowes, a new weekday N44 journey to Balerno and much more. For full details of all improvements and where to catch your NightBus in the city centre, click here.
