Have you been on the 26?

The Winners of our 'Us on the Bus' competition, The Walker Family, now star on their own individual buses travelling around our operating area.

They use the bus to get around the City, visiting friends and taking family trips.

Jack Walker tells us about their favourite route.

Service 26

The number 26 has to be our favorite as the bus stop is straight across the road from our house and is extremely reliable and frequent.  It runs all the way from Clerwood to the beach at Seton Sands.

I use it every morning to get to and from school, to go swimming on Saturday and to go visit family.

Dad uses it to go up town. Mum and Ellie use it to go visit Nana, to go and meet friends up town and to take Ellie to her friends house at Clerwood!

We use the bus all the time for family trips and have for as long as I can remember.

Look out for the Walkers on the back of your bus.

Murrayburn Primary School Outdoor Classroom - 1 year on

Edinburgh's first outdoor classroom was donated by Lothian Buses to Murrayburn Primary School last year after they appealed to us for extra space for their staff and pupils.

The bus, painted in school colours with their logo on it was delivered to the school last June.

Since then it has become the centre of the schools outdoor learning projects and has encouraged them to work towards their Green Flag award.

The bus is used as a learning space for all the pupils throughout the week and on a Tuesday is used by the schools outdoor learning co-ordinator to teach the children to plant seeds, look after their environment and eat healthily.

Mrs Hadan, Murrayburn Primary School Outdoor Learning Co-ordinator said:

Having the outdoor classroom has been the catalyst to start our outdoor learning project which the kids love.

We have partnered with 'Grow for Live' to teach the children healthy eating and are planting herbs and potatoes to be eaten at school in the area around the bus.

I would like to thank Lothian Buses for their help donating this bus and helping us set it up in the playground.  It has made a huge difference to the school.

The school are now looking to the future and raising funds to get the area around the bus decked to make further use of the facilities and teach a wide range of subjects in an environment that the children can be creative in.

Congratulations to our team of drivers, travelshops, customer services and accounts staff who took part in the MoonWalk over the weekend.

Thirty two of our staff took part in the full moon with the majority completing the twenty six mile walk in under 9 hours. Others walked the Half Moon.

Well done also goes to our drivers and operations staff who drove throughout the night until 1000 moving volunteers and walkers around the route.

The night was a great success with our staff raising a fantastic amount of money for this amazing charity.

Chairman’s 2012 Summary

$

0

Through the quality of our people, our fleet and our services, we at Lothian Buses continue to provide Edinburgh, its citizens and visitors with world-class public transport.

This continuing success story is testament to the hard work and dedication of our 2,000 employees. Their efforts have helped us achieve a 2012 net profit of £8.2 million, a 31% increase in profit from operations and a near 5% increase in total revenues year-on-year.

Generating healthy commercial returns for the business helps safeguard the livelihoods of our staff as well as allowing further investment into the provision of quality services for our customers. We also provide our majority shareholder, The City of Edinburgh Council, with an annual dividend. Last year this was in excess of £3.0 million, allowing us to contribute positively towards the provision of public services.

Additionally, we invested significantly in our own business to the tune of £5.5 million, primarily in new buses and the redevelopment of our Longstone depot.

We also continue to invest in people and, as so many of our successes come back to our staff, we always ensure that we attract, retain and reward the best people in all disciplines of the business that we can.

Importantly, our commercial successes are built upon the provision of value-for-money fares and we continually strive to keep fares low whilst still offering the highest standards of public transport as demanded by our customers.

The last 18 months have been complex and challenging due to the growth of the business, introduction of East Lothian Buses and preparation for tram.  As a consequence of this activity Ian Craig was formally appointed to Chief Executive, which reflects his additional responsibilities over the past year.  In addition, Tom Norris was appointed as General Manager of Edinburgh Trams and most recently Sarah Boyd as Head of Operations – Bus.  These appointments followed formal organisational design studies, benchmarking and job sizing.  This is one of a number of steps that have been made to prepare the company for its enlarged and more complex role.

We now look forward to another year of commercial success as well as success continuing the themes of above; the provision of quality public transport that an iconic capital such as Edinburgh deserves. Objectives also include the continuation of the things that we quietly go about as part of our commitment to the city; our charitable work, our community work, our work with schools and disability groups and our award-winning environmental efforts.

These are the things that make Lothian Buses special and continue to cement the relationship we have with our city and its residents, developed over a 100 year history.

On that note, please let me thank-you on behalf of the Board of Lothian Buses and all of our staff for your continued support.

Chris Walton
Chairman,
Lothian Buses plc

One of Edinburgh’s most popular tourist attractions has retained its five star grading from Visit Scotland.

Edinburgh Bus Tours was first awarded five star status in October 2011. It has proved it has maintained VisitScotland’s exceptional standards being awarded the highest grading possible once again.
VisitScotland uses a five-level star-grading system to indicate the standard of customer care and range of facilities on offer at assessed tourist attractions and establishments.
Edinburgh Bus Tours is now the third most popular paid for attraction in Scotland after Edinburgh Castle and Edinburgh Zoo. Last year over 500,000 visitors hopped on the tour buses, with more expected to take advantage of the six available tours this year.

Tim Armour, General Manager at Edinburgh Bus Tours, said

“We work hard to maintain the highest standards, and to ensure all our staff deliver a five star experience every time. This award is testament to the excellent customer service my team provides all year round.

“With dry weather and festival season round the corner, we’re aiming to attract a record number of customers this year.”

This year, Edinburgh Bus Tours launched the new-look Edinburgh World Heritage Official Tour: A City of Contrasts in partnership with Edinburgh World Heritage. This earned a VisitScotland Regional Thistle Award in recognition of this successful partnership. The Horrible Histories commentary on board City Sightseeing was also re-launched to mark the 20th anniversary of the popular children’s series.

Manuela Calchini, Regional Director for VisitScotland, said:

“I’d like to congratulate Edinburgh Bus Tours on retaining their 5 star status within our Quality Assurance scheme. This top level of grading is only awarded to the very best experiences which offer supreme levels of customer care and facilities, and to reach this for a third consecutive year is a remarkable achievement.”
